Today I travel to Syracuse University to continue my work with their Future Professoriate Program. I was invited to offer a broad introductory overview to assessment, and I share my slides here.
Please reach out if you’d like to talk more about assessment for learning and student engagement. As I try to highlight in my presentation, unquestioned habits often get in the way of doing the type of teaching that would inspire our students and bring us joy in our work.
As I suggest in my presentation, the aim is to set ambitious learning goals for our students, and then think creatively about how to develop assessments and learning experiences that help students reach those goals. We have a great deal of freedom in our classroom, and we can use that freedom to do work that challenges and engages our students and ourselves.
It is hard to think creatively when the world around us feels so challenging and many of us are contending with feelings of demoralization and burnout. But I would like to very gently suggest that leaning into the freedom we have in our classrooms may offer us sparks of insight that can kindle into something very exciting for our students and ourselves in these terribly trying times.
Again, I am always here to offer support and ideas. Please just reach out, even if it is just to have an informal conversation.
