What a Career!

How did I get so lucky?

We all hope to get a fabulous job. But growing up around Midwestern cornfields I never thought I would have a job full of outdoor adventures in and on the sea and among beautiful Adirondack lakes and forests!

Invasive Species Research

I am currently doing grant work to study and control populations and impacts of the fascinating water chestnut plant.

Eurtophication Studies

For decades I’ve studied sources and levels of nutrients that make waters overly productive and at risk of oxygen stress and toxic algal blooms.

I recently posted a multiyear study comparing the ecology of fish-bearing and fishless lakes!

Adirondack Lake Research

I’ll soon publish a nearly decade-long comparison of the ecology and zooplankton of about 50 lakes, half of which are small, natural lakes without fish (kettle bogs). I’ve done previous work on acid rain impacts on lakes around Old Forge, NY and more recently I discovered small bog lakes that are naturally acidic. This stressor helps exclude fish, which then favors different types of food chains and adaptations in lake zooplankton. Who knew lakes without fish could be this interesting!
